Howdy Ya’ll!

One thing that has never changed in the nearly 30 years that have passed since I met my lovely wife, TJ, is her loathing of country music. During the mid-1990s, I went through a phase where I listened to a lot of country and folk music. At that point in my life, it touched me and, while I did listen to other genres of music, there was a lot of country in the mix.

Eventually, I moved away from it and we’ve not had any twangy music in the house for many years now. Well, I think that may be about to change. Micah has declared that he likes country music. I have no idea when or how he came to this conclusion but I don’t want to discourage him from expressing his likes and dislikes when it comes to music, books, film, or any other form of art. He’s pretty sensitive and nervous to declare preferences so I’m working with him to stand by his choices no matter what others like.

Of course, his announcement was not welcomed by TJ. There’s no nice way to put this so I’ll just put it out there. TJ is a music snob. She enjoys pretty much one type of music – indie/alt rock – and doesn’t have a problem with offering up little digs here and there when forced to listen to something else. She’s gotten a lot better since I finally told her to knock it the hell off and deal with the fact that I like all sorts of music and I will listen to what I like the same as she does. I very rarely torture her with folk or classical. And she’s so grateful that I never caught the opera bug.

Country has been the hardest for her to stomach. When Micah announced his new musical preference, I swear, the look on TJ’s face could only have been more horrified if he had declared himself a Republican and planned to donate his college fund to the Scott Walker campaign. I laughed out loud and immediately told him that he should never be afraid to tell us what he enjoys, it doesn’t matter whether we agree or not.

So to show my support, I’m listening to some country music that has been released in the past decade. The artists I know are considered “classic country” so it’s time to brush up so I can enjoy this phase with Micah. And to torture TJ by singing along loudly on road trips.

Hey Cheri!! Great post!! I have to say you might want to let TJ know that this is usually a phase. My son at the same age liked a lot of country also, and now he would not listen to it unless forced. He likes things like Marylin Manson and Blind Guardian…ect. I am betting he will enjoy all types including rock as he learns more guitar. =) Good for you for letting Micah know to be himself. This is an important thing. Heck my son went through a Backstreet Boys thing for a while too. (I like all sorts so I always made a point to listen to things he liked)

Comment if you want. You know, no pressure.
